Interconnectors — the cables and pipelines that link national energy systems — may prove more transformative for the Eastern Mediterranean than any single gas field. By physically connecting markets, they turn isolated resources into tradable energy and let neighboring grids support one another.
Electricity interconnection in particular allows the region to share renewable output, balance demand peaks, and reduce the cost of keeping the lights on. Projects linking the islands and coasts of the basin could reshape how power flows across borders.
The obstacles are financing and trust as much as engineering. But where interconnectors are built, they create a shared stake in stability that pure competition never could.
